Nowadays more and more goods are ordered online with the result that more and more goods have to be transported. This leads to an increasing ecological footprint. The gigantic CO2 emissions released by the combustion of fossil fuels not only have a negative impact on the environment, but are also very harmful to the health of humans and animals. Within the Living Lab Green Fulfillment, e-Fulfillment Hub is working on a CO2 emissions meter that provides real-time insight into the CO2 emissions per package or order.
The CO2 meter is a (software) tool that provides real-time insight into the CO2 emissions per package or order. To this end, the first step is to collect data. Think, for example, of the impact on the environment of transport, packaging, processing, storage and energy consumption. Systems are smartly linked to each other to unlock and combine this data. The CO2 emission meter thus goes much further than the currently applicable standards in the market, such as ‘Bewust Bezorgd‘, in which much more work is done with averages and general key figures and where the emphasis is purely on transporting the package from warehouse to consumer.
The CO2 emissions can then also be communicated to the customer when he places an order, possibly with additional options for how the emissions can be reduced. Being able to measure CO2 emissions in real-time and on the basis of true cost accounting also ensures that connected logistics service providers are future-proof. Not only to contribute to the climate goals, but also to be able to be settled on the basis of actual emissions by all stakeholders (consumers, webshops, society and government). Something in which our partner Moonen Packaging is already a forerunner and which the other innovation partners are happy to join.
In order to also contribute to the broad social necessity, the innovation is offered open source in the market. In addition, the aim is to recruit additional project partners who will invest additionally in this product and process innovation, all the more so because the potential and social importance of this is great.
