Living Lab Green Fulfilment
The knowledge and innovation platform for sustainable e-fulfilment
Sustainability is of great importance in the world of e-commerce and logistics. More and more goods ordered online need to be transported, leaving a significant ecological footprint. The pressure from (environmentally conscious) consumers, organizations, and governments on companies to handle the environment responsibly is increasing. This presents challenges for webshops and logistics companies to operate more sustainably and come up with sustainable logistics solutions. Consider, for example, the high demands placed on sustainable packaging, CO2 emissions, energy consumption, minimizing returns, and more.
Although the need and ambitions are significant, it remains difficult for many companies to truly become more sustainable. Often, the necessary knowledge, skills, and resources to change are lacking, resulting in the desired sustainability lagging behind within the sector. e-Fulfilment Hub is taking up the challenge to develop new knowledge and concrete practical solutions that will enable companies to operate more sustainably. This stems from the ambition to make the world of e-commerce and e-fulfillment greener together. We call this journey “Green Fulfilment!”
To make this possible, e-Fulfilment Hub has taken the initiative to establish the “Living Lab Green Fulfilment.” The Living Lab Green Fulfilment is the knowledge and innovation platform for sustainable e-fulfilment! The Living Lab is a testing ground for research and innovation in sustainable logistics. With the Living Lab, e-Fulfilment Hub creates a platform where new technological and social innovations are developed in co-creation with various partners, webshops, educational institutions, and governments. The Living Lab thus contributes to the development of knowledge about sustainable e-fulfilment on the one hand, and on the other hand, focuses on developing, validating, and implementing innovations. This leads to the development of concrete solutions that enable companies to become more sustainable.
The Living Lab broadly focuses on developing knowledge and innovations around sustainable e-fulfilment, responding to sustainable developments in logistics. To give shape to this, so-called innovation projects are launched. An innovation project is a collaboration between two or more parties working together on a specific theme with the goal of developing a new idea, product, or process. Each innovation project must make a substantial contribution to the sustainability of the logistics chain. Currently, there are three innovation projects, but new ones can be added based on the needs and possibilities of the partners. The first innovation project focuses on promoting sustainable transportation. In this project, the SolarOnTop concept, from Helmond-based IM Efficiency (a trailer integrated with solar panels), is being tested and validated in the market to promote electric transportation. The second innovation project is about developing a system to measure the CO2 emissions per package in real-time. This project aims to push the boundaries compared to current guidelines on measuring CO2 emissions. Finally, efforts are being made to further develop the Green Fulfilment Maturity Model.
